About the Library

The Greece Public Library serves one of the largest towns in Monroe County from a single main building on the Town of Greece campus. It belongs to the Monroe County Library System, so a Greece card opens the doors at libraries across the county.

The building

The current library opened in 2000. It is a bright, open building of roughly 35,000 square feet, and it took over from the 1962 library on Mitchell Road. A few things people tend to remember:

The aquarium

For years the centerpiece was a 20-foot-long freshwater tank, about 4 feet tall and holding some 1,200 gallons, stocked mostly with South American community fish.

The gardens

A children's garden with a path out to a gazebo. In 2021 the library added a Story Garden area for young readers.

Reading nooks

Quiet corners with comfortable seating, plus free Wi-Fi and public computers throughout.

Secondhand Prose

A used bookstore inside the library, run by volunteers from the Friends of the Library.

The interior has recently been going through a full remodel, so some spaces may look different from what you remember.

Branches through the years

Greece has tried several branch locations as the town grew and shifted:

  • 1920s A traveling book caravan stops at the Dewey Avenue Union Church. The Monroe County Traveling Library takes over later.
  • 1958 The Greece Public Library receives its provisional charter.
  • 1962 The first permanent library building opens on Mitchell Road.
  • 1969 The Paddy Hill branch opens in the former Mother of Sorrows Church.
  • 1974 A North Greece branch opens in North Greece Plaza.
  • 1978 The Lowden Point branch opens on Lowden Point Road.
  • 1980 The Dewey-Stone branch opens in the Dewstone Shopping Center.
  • 1991 The North Greece branch closes.
  • 1994 The Lowden Point branch closes.
  • 1998 Dewey-Stone moves up Dewey Avenue and becomes the Barnard Crossing Branch.
  • 2000 The new main library opens on the Town campus. Paddy Hill closes.
  • 2014 Barnard Crossing moves to 2808 Dewey Ave.
  • 2021 The Story Garden children's area opens.
  • 2020s Barnard Crossing closes permanently during the pandemic.

About this website

For years, greecelibrary.org was the library's home on the web. Its hours, Barnard Crossing page and directions were linked from schools, local directories and community sites. The library has since moved to greecepubliclibrary.org.

This site keeps those old pages useful. It's an independent guide. It isn't run by or affiliated with the Greece Public Library or the Town of Greece. For your account, program sign-ups or official notices, please use the library's own website.
