Town of Greece Public Library – Children’s Room Renovation

10/9/2008

Like a toddler outgrowing their shoes faster than you can buy them, the children’s area at the Greece Public Library was already outgrowing its space.  Picture books were packed so tightly on the shelves that there wasn’t any wiggle room. Although building an expansive addition wasn’t an option, creative use of the existing space was. The renovation project was then initiated through a generous grant procured by Congressman Tom Reynolds, which allowed our vision to unfold.

After months of research, planning, and input from committee members; Annette Basinger of Hanlon Architects worked to redesign the current children’s space with our youngest patrons in mind. To encourage preschoolers to become independent library users, the library is utilizing a unique shelving concept for our picture book collection.  This concept groups books together by popular categories such as “Things That Go” which are aimed specifically towards preschoolers’ interests. By displaying more books with their covers facing out and at a younger child’s eye level, children have been able to browse the collection like never before.

In addition to room for books, there are more spaces for people too.  Our 20 foot long tropical fish aquarium is the center of attention with comfortable seating perfect for reading a book together. Even the new computer tables and children’s information desk have been designed with varying heights for the convenience of our littlest patrons to our biggest.

As with all of the Monroe County public libraries, the Town of Greece Library is busier than ever and expects to reach a record of one million items checked out in 2008. By continuing to engage our youngest library patrons and creating lifelong library users, that trend will continue to grow too.
