Greece Librarian wins New York State Pied Piper Award

4/12/2010

The Pied Piper Award, given by the New York Library Association, recognizes excellence in the creation of an individual program that promotes service to the young people of New York State Libraries.

The Greece Public Library is pleased to announce that one of our creative and innovative librarians is the 2010 recipient of this award. Jennifer Preisser in conjunction with her colleague, Amy Joslyn from the Fairport library, won this award for the creation of “Read to Me” bags

The Greece library has a large population of children ages birth to 18 months. In an effort to promote early literacy and meet the needs of this burgeoning group, Jennifer Preisser devised the idea of pre-assembling bags and promoting them to young children and their parents.

Through the generous support of the Friends of the Greece Library, Jennifer assembled 50 self-contained kits/bags. Each bag contains 2 board books, 1 music CD, and 1 finger puppet. There is an informational sheet with tips for reading aloud with your baby as well as a booklist of recommended titles for babies.

The bags are incredibly popular not only with the intended audience, but with the library population in general. One mother commented that, “My baby loved it so much, we hated to bring it back.”
